Donegal Yarns

The genuine and original producer of Donegal (Tweed) effect Yarns in Kilcar, Ireland, formerly known as Kilcarra Yarns.
Donegal effect yarns take their name from the South West Donegal region where the yarn was developed.
The yarn consists of a base colour mixture of up to six individual colours with up to another seven or eight contrasting solid fleck dotted along the surface of the yarn. The skill and craft in producing this yarn lies in the ability to attach the fleck  while keeping the solid contrasting feature of the fleck intact.
To keep prices at a minimum both yarns are purchased on cones "in oil" and are weighed off in skeins by ourselves. The oil is a mineral oil used in producing the yarn and has a function in reducing the build-up of static electricity. This oil makes that the yarn feels a lot more rough and rugged on the cone than it will do when washed clean. You will also notice a difference in gauge when knitting off the cone or skein. The cleanwashed yarn will knit up to less stitches on a 4 inch swatch as the yarn "fluffs out" when washed. Please read the washing instructions!

We advise knitting a gauge swatch and then washing it to get a sense of the difference in gauge and appearence before starting on your project or to wash the yarn before knitting it up.
